About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Hauppauge, Kotobuki offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that sushi lovers and enthusiasts of fresh, vibrant seafood won’t want to miss. Specializing in traditional Japanese cuisine with a modern twist, this beloved restaurant serves up an exquisite variety of sushi and sashimi alongside artfully crafted appetizers and hearty lunch specials that bring the rich flavors of Japan straight to your plate.

The moment you sit down at Kotobuki, you are welcomed by an intimate and cozy atmosphere that invites you to linger over your meal. It’s the kind of place where the energy is palpable—busy and buzzing, yet warmly familiar, a spot where many patrons become regulars not just for the food but for the sense of community cultivated by the attentive and personable staff. The team, including standout members like Yoshi, Kevin, and Jay, fosters a genuine connection, making each visit feel like catching up with old friends.

The menu is a celebration of Japanese culinary artistry. Popular dishes such as the Sushi and Sashimi Combo for 2 showcase the exceptional quality and freshness of the fish, delighting the palate with every bite. For those who crave bold, adventurous flavors, the Spicy Tuna Pizza and Crazy Scallop Roll provide intriguing, spicy notes balanced by refined textures. Don’t overlook the savory delights like the Sautéed Oysters or the subtly flavored Salmon Carpaccio, which melt gracefully on the tongue. Classic options like the California Roll and Shrimp Shumai bring comforting familiarity with a high-quality execution.

The appetizers from both the kitchen and sushi bar lend a diverse range of tastes and textures. For example, the crispy Age Tofu served with dashi broth offers a soothing, umami-rich start, while the Beef Tataki—thinly sliced and seared, drizzled with a garlic ponzu sauce—combines tender meatiness with zesty notes. Seafood aficionados will relish the elegant Fluked Usuzukuri, pairing delicate fluke slices with piquant daikon and ponzu, epitomizing the delicate balance central to Japanese cuisine.

Lunchtime at Kotobuki is an experience in itself with well-curated specials like the Unadon (broiled eel over rice) and the satisfying Tonkotsu Ramen, which comfort the soul with deep, savory broth and tender noodles. Their lunch specials offer unmatched value without compromising on freshness or flavor.

Customers consistently praise Kotobuki not just for the high quality of its sushi but also for the heartfelt service that enhances every visit. Tara Hoffman appreciates the team’s welcoming spirit and notes how the staff’s dedication makes Kotobuki a beloved destination for her family over the years. Florence J highlights the cozy ambiance paired with the freshest seafood, creating a consistently delightful experience she enjoys sharing with friends. Meanwhile, Chris Mignano lauds the exquisite salmon carpaccio and the staff member Titien, whose care and attention turn every meal into something extraordinary.

Even with its popularity and busy vibe, Kotobuki’s commitment to quality shines through. One reviewer affectionately notes the “simple packaging” philosophy—they invest more in great ingredients than flashy presentation, which is a promise you can taste in every bite. While the intimacy of the seating means this isn’t the ideal spot for a quiet, romantic evening, the lively atmosphere complements the experience for those seeking genuine, high-quality Japanese cuisine on Long Island.

Whether you are a sushi connoisseur or new to Japanese flavors, Kotobuki delivers an authentic, flavorful journey that keeps diners coming back. It’s a culinary gem where passion for fresh seafood meets skilled preparation and heartfelt service, making every meal here memorable and satisfying.

The team is awesome here! I love coming to see Yoshi over the many many years, we look for her. Kevin and Jay are awesome and have been great to us! I have been in food and retail my whole life and look for places that don’t just have good food but appreciate their people/ customers. This team continues to make this place special to me and my family and always lead with what they can do with energy and enthusiasm. They even take the time to engage on the phone with take out orders, they also make sure you know they know it’s you. That is what make people an to come back feeling like they are appreciated. You are the best!!!! And of course everyone know food is great!

Ordered Kotobuki tonight! It’s raining out, ordered Uber. This place is always busy, dine in or take out. This is my go to spot if I want to eat sushi and only want the raw stuff. It’s so good over here. I forget sometimes how good they are. The packaging is simple not like the other fancy places. They spend their money on the food! The quality is really good! You get what you paid for over here! The ginger was so good compare to the other places. This is fresh ginger, hints of sweet and spicy to it. I loved the ginger, it was nice big pieces and crispy. The wasbi was good too not so spicy!! The sashimi were nice chunks compared to some other places that give you very thin slices. They don’t mess around when it comes to the food! This place doesn’t have fancy chopsticks and packaging. This place has the best quality of fish in Long Island!

Kotobuki is one of those places that is always busy but you also know you're not going there to have a romantic dinner. It is very tight. The table next to you is so close that you literally hear the person's conversation. The employees always seem stressed. Now to the food. The sushi is good. I do enjoy it. Probably one of the better sushi restaurants on Long Island. You will wait for the food. The online ordering system is terrible. One thing I will say is that they definitely have the best 'spicy mayo'. If you enjoy spicy mayo with your sushi get theirs. All in all, enjoy the food. It is good. But don't go there for the ambiance....go there to enjoy the food and leave. Hope that helps....

Last Friday, my wife and I found ourselves wandering through the Hauppauge, NY neighborhood after 9:30 p.m., searching for a place to eat. Having been to Kotobuki before, we decided it was worth revisiting—and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. We both started with hot green tea, which arrived alongside warm towels to cleanse our hands. Oh my God—what a soothing therapy for the hands before dinner! The tea was piping hot, with a grassy, fresh flavor that instantly awakened the senses. Next came the asari soup, a ritual must-have for me. Its delicate, savory broth was hot and satisfying, with just the right balance—not overpowering, but deeply comforting. We followed it with an otoshi salad, a mix of pickled cucumbers offering intriguing flavors. While it was enjoyable, it’s not a dish I’d personally crave again. Our main dish was a standout: fried soft-shell crab, served beneath a crisp julienned salad and topped with a small ball of avocado and tuna sashimi. It was packed with flavor—each bite a delightful contrast of textures and tastes. Service was prompt and attentive, and the food arrived quickly. Everything was delicious enough to make us want to return—and recommend it to others looking for a satisfying late-night bite.
